Jetboil Genesis Review: Real Customer Feedback

Nov 11, 2024

If you’re an avid camper or backpacker, you've likely heard of the Jetboil Genesis stove. This impressive cooking system has gained a lot of attention for its portability, efficiency, and versatility, making it a go-to choice for outdoor enthusiasts. In this Jetboil Genesis review, we’ll delve into real buyer feedback to help you decide if this is the right stove for your outdoor adventures.

1.Review from Customer "Jill":

"I haven't used this stove a whole lot yet, but so far everything is great. Living at high elevation (over 9000 ft) I expect to burn through propane really fast but this has seemed plenty efficient so far and I'm able to cook food just like I would on the range in the house. I got it for planned car-camping trips and parking lot lunches on long, kids sport tournament days, and the compactness of this stove is stellar. We have been using a Weber Traveler for parking lot lunches and this saves a ton of car space and car stink (obviously any grill isn't even in the same category as a camp stove, and we'll still take the Traveler to some events). I was hesitant to get a stove that doesn't have a rigid bottom (like the green stoves everybody thinks of when they picture "camp stove") but since I plan to bring a foldable table *anyway* I decided to take a chance on this unit. Using this stove on a table is plenty stable. It does need around 30" of linear space on the table to support the small propane tank in the right position, though I've seen others let the propane tank dangle off the edge a table or using it on the ground and I think that would work ok if you don't have kids running around, you're in a pinch, or are trying to skip the table. The plastic wind shield is just silly so I plan to pick up a separate foldable metal shield to help with cooking on windy days but will keep the plastic shield in the travel case to give it structure and for just-in-case. The stove seems very durable and doesn't give the impression of lightweight junk. Yes, some of the price comes from the brand name, but it definitely is a high quality piece of equipment and I'd rather get something good than buy several duds (and end up spending more in aggregate). I plan to use different pots/pans when I'm not really trying to conserve packing space, just to extend the life of the pot and pan (and since I generally avoid nonstick coatings) so I can't speak to the durability of the pot and pan yet. It's also worth noting that the lid is plastic. I missed that in reading the product description."

2.Review from Customer "K T":

"BUYER BEWARE!! DO NOT TRUST JETBOIL BASECAMP. Based on my good experience with the Mini Mo, we bought the base camp for an 8-day Kayak trip down the Yukon River. On the second usage, the gas regulator failed. This was a disaster!! Upon looking at other reviews, this is a common problem; Jet Boil knows they have a problem with the regulators going out for at least a couple of years now and has done nothing to fix it. If you are car camping, it's not a big deal, but if you are seven days away from civilization, it’s a huge deal. This is a $400 piece of equipment and costs as much as some home stoves. For that price, I expected quality and reliability. If you own a basecamp and use it as a critical piece of equipment, buy a second regulator (50$ which is 3x higher than it should be for a gas regulator, BUT it's safer than what happened to us). I hope this helps others. KT"

3.Review from Customer "B75":

"First let me say that the flame control on this thing is the best I have every seen in a camp stove. It also packs down super compact for what you are getting. The smaller pan is super non stick. Now to the disappointing.
For the price point it should come with a longer flexible hose. That solid gas line just about ruins the whole experience for me. The coated non stick pan started flaking after 2 uses. I only use silicone utensils to not sure what that is about and the handle is flimsy. The big pot is good for bowling water but anything else will stick to the bottom instantly. Also it only comes with 1 lid.. Ultimately I regret spending that much money on it"

4.Review from Customer "Dan":

"Recently purchased the Jetboil Genesis 2-Burner Stove and the stove works like a champ. It's super solid and well constructed. One reason why I don't give it a 5 star rating.
As other customers have mentioned, the windscreen is a joke. Jetboil, why on earth would you build such a bombproof stove and then use cheap plastic for the windscreen?? It's not easy to install, and plastic so close to a flame seems like it was a complete afterthought. I imagine you field tested this but I'm shocked that someone agreed this is the cheap branded windshield we want to include. Anybody ever think of using heavy gauge tin like MSR did with their Whisper Lite 30 years ago??"

5.Review from Customer "Cross":

"I purchased this stove after looking at many reviews on it. It is a great design that stows quite compact. It cooks well with great adjustability. Seems to be well made and durable. The expandability seems like a nice option as well that I have not utilized. The pans are nice in that they nest well and fit the stove snug. You do have to be careful not to scratch the cooking surface as they are not a bomber cooking non stick material. Great stove that has worked well so far. The price is steep for what you get but it is high quality with nice features."

6.Review from Customer "Anne":

"We are a small family who have been camping for many years and often in remote parts of Australia, so we need reliability with every critical piece of equipment, which includes cookers. We had been looking at the JG for ages but cost was always a big consideration. We have tried a number of advertised burners (propane and butane) but each one failed in one way or another. Then we saw the JG on special at $379 and decided to buy it. Wow we wish we had bought it before spending on the other [inferior] cookers. You can immediately see and feel the quality materials used in its build. It comes in a protective bag and is easily and quickly set up. It also neatly fits into our camp kitchen saving space and the click ignition (not piezo) makes firing it up just effortless. The only issue we can find so far is the (clear) wind screen - it’s tricky to attach and detach so we are using our own, but the JB doesn’t seem to be affected much by wind anyway, cooking and boiling quicker, than all our previous cookers and at an even temperature too. The old saying is ‘you get what you pay for’ rings true so far. It’s the only quality cooker available in Australia in my view and is compact as a bonus! Thanks JB!"

7.Review from Customer "CL888":

"If look at the genesis stove alone, I wouldn’t consider it the the best choice in its category, mainly because of the price. There are cheaper alternatives.
However, after bundling with the pan and the pot. It becomes a very portable all in one cooking solution. Everything can be packed into one bag. It saves a lot of space. It’s pricy but if I want the convenience, I have no other choice than this one.
It would be better if the lid and the windscreen are made of metal and the pot is coated with ceramic just like the pan. These improvements would make the system perfect"

8.Review from Customer "Michael B":

"Don't get me wrong, it's probably the nicest, most compact stove on the market, but for the price? I'm a Rafter and sometimes things get knocked around. As a result, the frying pan has a small dent now. I think Jetboil could have had used a little thicker metal. The windscreen melted the FIRST time I used it because the pan got too close to it for too long? (Don't tell my wife!) The replacement windscreen is only like $10, but why design it out of plastic? I just ordered a metal folding one off Amazon for $8. I'm happy with the stove, but for the price, I wanted confetti to blow out of it everytime I use it?!?!"

9.Review from Customer "Hammer":

"I've had many portable camping stoves in my nearly 30 years camping - starting w/the traditional 2 burner LPG stoves, then moving to a double burner butane stove, then to a single burner butane stove, then to a hotplate style (w/lid) butane stove, then finally to my most recent stove, a Coleman "Pack n Go". But the Jetboil Genesis Basecamp Stove System is easily the best I've had to date. The entire unit packs relatively compact (w/the pot, pan & lid), yet both the frying pan and pot that are included in the basecamp system, are a decent size. Making cooking for 3-4 people w/them no longer means overflowing food or cooking in batches. Pairing my Jetboil Genesis Basecamp, with my Jetboil Sumo (for boiling water), and a grill over a firepit, covers all my camping cooking needs. The Genesis Basecamp Stove System is a brilliantly design compact camping stove. I highly recommend this product."

10.Review from Customer "Sasee A.":

"I bought this during black Friday for a good price, but still the price is much more than most of the traditional two burner camping stoves.
I picked this up mainly for the size, as we carpool for camping and space is always an issue when four people go in one vehicle.
Although I haven't used it yet, it looks solid and the quality looks excellent. As everyone says the wind blocker seems flumpsy
and jetboil really have to get their Engineers work on a better design/solution.

Overall I am very happy with the product and will update this review after I use it at a campsite."
